About

Have you wanted to know how to make a website but never knew where to start?

What is Web-Hosting-Basics all about?

Hi, my name is Jim. I’ve worked in the technical support field for different technology companies for many years now, mostly for companies that sell web hosting to customers. I’ve come to notice that far too many people in my industry expect the customer to already know the basics and will ask things like:

  • What’s your domain name?
  • Which POP server are you using?
  • Do you have an FTP client?
  • What Sendmail server do you have configured?

If these questions don’t make much sense to you then you have come to the right place. Let’s face it, nobody enjoys calling technical support when they have a problem, especially if you continue to get asked questions you don’t really understand.

I plan on helping you understand “the basics” of web hosting. Hopefully this will not only allow your future calls to technical support go easier and a little less painful for you but more importantly, maybe you won’t have to call in the first place.

What I plan on covering.

I plan on getting my topics from actual questions I have received time and time again over the years at my job. I will also start with the most basic topics to make sure we are all on a level playing field.

I don’t plan in getting into complex subject such as how to code in PHP. Remember this is “Web Hosting Basics” so at a later time I plan on talking about what PHP is and basic concepts about it but that’s it.

How will the information be presented?

I plan on using a number of ways to present the information to you. Depending upon what I believe to be the most useful and entertaining for that subject it could be just text, links, pictures, audio, and also video.

I believe it’s easier and faster to learn when you involve more of your senses at one time. Learning from a instructor in a one to one basis while you are actually doing something is the best but not very practical over the web. I will try to incorporate video as much as possible to help demonstrate ideas to make things easier to learn.

If you have any questions or suggestions please contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Jim.
